چکیده

This chapter addresses the problem of appearance matching, while employing the covariance descriptor. We tackle the extremely challenging case in which the same non-rigid object has to be matched across disjoint camera views. Covariance statistics averaged over a Riemannian manifold are fundamental for designing appearance models invariant to camera changes. We discuss different ways of extracting an object appearance by incorporating various training strategies. Appearance matching is enhanced either by discriminative analysis using images from a single camera or by selecting distinctive features in a covariance metric space employing data from two cameras. By selecting only essential features for a specific class of objects (e.g. humans) without defining a priori feature vector for extracting covariance, we remove redundancy from the covariance descriptor and ensure low computational cost. Using a feature selection technique instead of learning on a manifold, we avoid the over-fitting problem. The proposed models have been successfully applied to the person re-identification task in which a human appearance has to be matched across non-overlapping cameras. We carry out detailed experiments of the suggested strategies, demonstrating their pros and cons w.r.t. recognition rate and suitability to video analytics systems.

Hierarchical Gaussian Descriptors with Application to Person Re-Identification

Describing the color and textural information of a person image is one of the most crucial aspects of person re-identification (re-id). In this paper, we present novel meta-descriptors based on a hierarchical distribution of pixel features. Although hierarchical covariance descriptors have been successfully applied to image classification, the mean information of pixel features, which is absent...

Covariance descriptor based on bio-inspired features for person re-identification and face verification

Avoiding the use of complicated pre-processing steps such as accurate face and body part segmentation or image normalization, this paper proposes a novel face/person image representation which can properly handle background and illumination variations. Denoted as gBiCov, this representation relies on the combination of Biologically Inspired Features (BIF) and Covariance descriptors [1]. More pr...

BiCov: a novel image representation for person re-identification and face verification

This paper proposes a novel image representation which can properly handle both background and illumination variations. It is therefore adapted to the person/face reidentification tasks, avoiding the use of any additional pre-processing steps such as foreground-background separation or face and body part segmentation. This novel representation relies on the combination of Biologically Inspired ...

Local Descriptors Encoded by Fisher Vectors for Person Re-identification

This paper proposes a new descriptor for person reidentification building on the recent advances of Fisher Vectors. Specifically, a simple vector of attributes consisting in the pixel coordinates, its intensity as well as the first and second-order derivatives is computed for each pixel of the image. These local descriptors are turned into Fisher Vectors before being pooled to produce a global ...

Supplementary Material for Hierarchical Gaussian Descriptor for Person Re-Identification

In section 4.2 of the paper, we compared the distribution modeling of GOG to other distributions. Below, we describe the details of the compared methods. The Mean, Cov and Gauss are global distribution descriptors of pixel features within each region. The Cov-ofCov, Cov-of-Gauss and GOG are hierarchical distribution descriptors. The Cov-of-Cov uses covariance matrix in both patch and region mod...
